Introduction
In November 2006, the first
faith-based counselling programme was launched at Cluster A4 of Changi Prison Complex undertaken by the Muslim
Counselling Service of SANA. Thirty-five inmates from the adult prisoners category and 34 inmates from the
young prisoners and RTC category were selected to undergo an intensive religious counselling programme which
lasted for 12 months. The program was named MIRCP (Muslim Intensive Religious Counselling Programme). All
inmates have since graduated from the programme and are now gradually released from
detention.
Incare
The programme took us to
a spiritual journey as we dive into the history of the Quran, its revelation and beautiful renditions that could
melt the toughest hearts. The memorisation of Surah Al-Baqarah as the core content of the programme has taught
us the real meaning of instilling confidence, patience and perseverance. The introduction of the science of
Qiraat (various recitations) has shown us the importance of preserving valuable traditions and the need to
recognise and accept differences amongst us.
Aftercare
Recognising the need to
keep these inmates together after their release have prompted the counsellors to embark on an aftercare
programme to enable the inmates to undergo a positive aftercare regime and offer the inmates suitable avenues
for them to pursue a meaningful journey towards reintegration with the community. The Prisons Muslim Fellowship,
PMF is thus formed as a platform for this vision.
PERGAS, The Singapore Islamic
Scholars and Religious Teachers Association has agreed to accept PMF as one of the component within
their Outreach (Dakwah) Department. This will allow the inmates to benefit from all religious programmes under
Pergas and they will have many opportunities to pursue or continue their religious studies in the hope to
develop a pool of reformed ex-offenders to act as mentors for the rest of the inmates population in the
prisons.
For all visitors to this
site, we humbly request your kindness and understanding in doing the duas for all of us here in facing the big
challenges before us in our quest for repentance and acceptance into the community. May Allah bestows his grace
to all.
